3-year-old adopted girl sexually abused, says Guwahati police
Sangeeta Datta, who was absconding from Friday, was held from Khanapara area, on Saturday.
GUWAHATI: The medical reports of the three-year-old girl, who was allegedly tortured by her adoptive doctor parents, established that she was also sexually abused, police said on Sunday.
Guwahati police commissioner Diganta Barah said the child has been kept at the state home and a team of medical experts has been providing treatment to her. "Her medical reports revealed many worrying injury marks on her body, including private parts. Reports establish sexual offence was also commited," he said.
The doctor couple and their house help have been arrested on charges of abusing the minor, police added.
The arrests were made and the minor was rescued after photographs of the girl tied to a pole on the terrace of their apartment in scorching heat went viral on social media on Friday.
Doctor Waliul Islam is a gastrointestinal and advanced general surgeon, while his wife Sangeeta Datta is a city-based psychiatrist. The help has been identified as Lakhi Rai, who too was arrested on Saturday after police found her involvement in the case.
Barah said Islam was picked up from Guwahati after the child's medical examination. His wife, who was absconding from Friday, was held from Khanapara area, on Saturday.
After preliminary interrogation and the medical reports of the child, they were arrested under charges of attempt to murder (307), voluntarily causing grievous hurt (325), wrongful restraint (341), and acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention (34) of the IPC, along with Section 75 (Punishment for cruelty to child) of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015 and various charges under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012. Barah said doctors have also found some worrying facts about Datta's adopted son, who is nearly three-year-old. "Doctors are treating him," he said.
