Chennai: The British deputy high commission in Chennai celebrated the coronation of King Charles III with special guests representing at least 20 countries on Saturday.
An official release said actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan was the chief guest at the event, presided over by British deputy high commissioner in Chennai Oliver Ballhatchet. The welcome address by the deputy high commissioner “reflected the modern, diverse, multi-faith of the United Kingdom and promoted the themes of youth, community, diversity and sustainability”.
It may be recalled that late Queen Elizabeth II had inaugurated the shooting of Kamal Haasan’s ambitious movie Marudhanayagam along with then chief minister M Karunanidhi in Chennai in 1997. The film was later dropped.
In his address Kamal Haasan shared his experience of hosting the Queen on the sets of his film and his visit later to Buckingham Palace in 2017. He highlighted the role of sports and art to unite people, especially the youth, to build an inclusive and sustainable future.
The guests at the event included Mahatma Gandhi’s grandson Gopalkrishna Gandhi and former national security advisor M K Narayanan among others.
