Jackson man, 40, charged with second-degree murder in wrong-way crash on I-696
A 40-year-old Jackson man could be facing life behind bars after a suspected drunk driving accident left another man dead Friday.
The Macomb County Prosecutor's Office announced Monday that Stephano Nabors has been charged and arraigned in connection to the fatal car crash. He is now facing multiple charges including second-degree murder, operating a vehicle while intoxicated and driving with a suspended license.
Nabors was driving against traffic on I-696, heading east on westbound lanes, when he collided with a vehicle near Couzens Road, causing it to roll over. When Michigan State Police tracked down Nabors and entered the highway near Groesbeck, Nabors almost hit the patrol car head-on, according to officials. Officers followed Nabors as he continued east down I-696, and he then crashed into a second vehicle near Gratiot Avenue.

The driver of the second vehicle, a 62-year-old Harper Woods resident, was pronounced dead at the scene.
“The defendant’s reckless decision to get behind the wheel while under the influence of alcohol resulted in a tragic and senseless loss of life," Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido said in a statement Monday. "Driving the wrong way on I-696 demonstrated a complete disregard for the safety of others on the road. We will vigorously pursue justice for the victim and his family.”
Nabors was charged with second-degree murder, a felony that carries a life sentence; operating a vehicle while intoxicated causing death, a 15-year felony; reckless driving causing death, a 15-year felony; driving while license suspended causing death, a 15-year felony; and fleeing and eluding police, a 15-year felony. Roseville District Court Judge Alyia Hakim set bond at $1,000,000.00 cash/surety.
The probable cause hearing is scheduled for May 17 at 8:30 a.m. and the preliminary exam is scheduled for May 24 at 8:30 a.m. in Roseville District Court.
