Birding takes off for kids in Chinchinim

Canacona: The Chinchinim-Deusua panchayat organised a special programme for schoolchildren titled ‘Know your birds’ at Durga lake, recently. Around 30 children attended the programme, during which over 20 species of birds, including migratory ones, were identified.
Sarpanch Valentino Barretto told reporters that the programme was organised as a summer outdoor activity for children.
“To encourage a connection between children and biodiversity, such activities are very important,” said Barretto, adding that such activities should also be included in the school curriculum.
“Youth are slowly getting disconnected from village life, which is very unfortunate,” he said.
Panchayat members also participated in the programme.
Resource person Tilroy Fernandes, a bird enthusiast and member of GBCN, along with Mabel Menezes, assisted the children in identifying the birds.
