Nagpur: Laxminarayan Institute of Technology (
LIT) plans to start 14 BTech and MTech courses, eight departments and six centres once it gets the ‘unitary public university’ status from the government of Maharashtra.
The historic institution has been waiting for the title ever since deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis announced in his
budget speech on March 9 that it would be on the lines of College of Engineering in Pune (COEP). It would be rechristened ‘Laxminarayan Innovation Technological University (LITU)’.
On March 10, TOI had reported about the plan to bestow LIT with the ‘Uunitary University’ title.
Talking to TOI, LIT director Rajiv Mankar said the new courses would be launched in phases, after receiving the ‘unitary public university’ status. “We plan to start two new undergraduate (BTech) courses in biochemical and pharmaceutical and engineering, if we become a university before the 2023-24 session starting from June. We already have the requisite infrastructure to accommodate students. As the first year course is common, we have sufficient time to recruit the faculty,” said Mankar.
Admitting that it’s already late to start a new session as a unitary university, Mankar said they would be satisfied even if their new first year batch could begin their studies under the banner of LITU.
“It’s a long procedure even after becoming a university. We need to constitute our Board of Governors (BOG) for approval of new courses and departments and also for increasing the intake capacity. We can make all the changes from the 2024-25 session. We want the process to be expedited as there’s no point in waiting for one year for becoming a university,” he said.
