OPINION:
For a country that fought for its independence from British rule with a civil war that ended nearly 240 years ago, the U.S. still seems to have a lot of interest in the kings and queens of England, based on the number of column inches given to the recent coronation.
A change in leadership, especially after 70 years, should certainly get a mention in the papers, but as King Charles’ position is effectively only ceremonial, it is not that important. There are few individuals capable of or qualified to seek leadership, and fewer still who should seek it in the first place. But when the only qualification for a position is one’s spot in a family tree, you’re not looking at the world’s best selection process. Genes should not allow you to automatically become a leader.
Is there an American family with someone in it who could lead or the next 70 years? The Bush family only lasted 12. From an outsider’s viewpoint, the best-known American families are the Kennedys and the Kardashians.
Respect your leaders — but make sure that you get leaders worthy of your respect.
