North Port officers arrest getaway driver in Facebook Marketplace scam

North Port Police officers arrested a second person on Friday in connection to an armed robbery that was set up through Facebook Marketplace.

Officers said that Jalexus Shrell Jenkins, 28, from Sarasota, was the getaway driver in the armed robbery. The arrest comes after the Wednesday arrest of Cly’etavia Ashonna Lee, 21, of Sarasota for her involvement in the robbery. Officers said that Lee met with two different victims over the past weekend who thought they were going to be purchasing a Chevrolet Camaro for $7,800 through Facebook Marketplace, an e-commerce platform.

Once the victims arrived at the 5200 block of South Biscayne Boulevard, Lee would ask if they were police before holding them at gunpoint and taking thousands in cash and credit cards, according to police.

“This case is the culmination of hard work by our detectives and staff,” said North Port Police Chief Todd Garrison. “We are thankful these individuals are being held accountable. Do not come to North Port thinking you will rip off our community. We will find you.”

Both Lee and Jenkins are facing charges of armed robbery, aggravated assault, and using a phone to facilitate a felony.
