Dharwad: All necessary preparations have been made to ensure free, fair and transparent elections in Dharwad district. Giving details here on Friday, DC and district election officer Gurudatt Hegde said 15, 23,080 voters are eligible to cast their vote.
The district also has 21,036 physically challenged voters and 32,301 voters aged 80 and above. Of these, 400 are centenarians. Under ‘Vote from home’ facility, 1,686 elderly persons and 392 physically challenged persons had agreed to cast their votes. Of these, 1,615 elders and 383 physically disabled have already voted.
There are 1,642 polling booths, including six auxiliary booths and 738 polling locations. Of these, 944 are in urban pockets and 692 in rural areas. As many as 216 polling booths are declared as sensitive while 162 have been declared as vulnerable.
The election officials have registered 58 cases of violation of model code of conduct and seized Rs 1.59 crore cash, liquor worth Rs 1.43 crore, drugs worth Rs 19.4 lakh, freebies worth Rs 82 lakh and precious metals worth Rs 5.64 crore.
Storing, sale and consumption of liquor will be banned from 5pm on May 8 till 6am on May 11, and again from 6am on May 13 till 6am on May 14. Prohibitory orders under Section 144 of CrPC will be promulgated from 6am on May 8 to 6pm on May 10, and again from 6am on May 13 to 6am on May 14.
To enable people to vote, holiday has been declared on May 10 to all central and state government offices, schools and colleges (both private and government), and various organisations. Counting of votes will take place at University of Agricultural Sciences campus here, and the results can be expected by noon onwards.
