NEW DELHI: Two members of the Jitender Gogi gang, including one who was involved in an attempted escape of jailed gangster Karambir alias Kaju last year from a Rohini hospital, have been arrested by Special Cell.
One of the accused, Abhishek, reportedly told police that he was close to most of the gang members and used to meet them in jails or courts in Delhi and other states. They were planning a second escape attempt during the gangster’s visit to any court and hospital in Delhi or Haryana.
Special commissioner of police (Special Cell) HGS Dhaliwal said, “The accused have been identified as Abhishek alias Amit alias Mitta (24) and Naveen alias Shanichar (38), both residents of Sonipat in Haryana.” A team led by ACPs Lalit Mohan Negi and Hridaya Bhushan made the arrests on April 27 after a scuffle on Outer Ring Road, he added. Ten pistols of .32 bore, two single-shot pistols, 20 live cartridges of 7.65mm and 10 cartridges of 8mm were seized.
Police said several teams of Special Cell had been working to trace the arms and ammunition suppliers in various parts of the country. In April, a tipoff was received that members of the Gogi gang were buying illegal weapons from Madhya Pradesh and Bihar to carry out extortion and land grabbing in Delhi, Haryana and other states. On April 27, police got to know that two gang members had recently bought illegal weapons from suppliers in Madhya Pradesh and would come to Timarpur.
The accused told investigators that they were associated with the Gogi gang and bought the weapons for it to carry out criminal activities, including contract killing, to affirm its supremacy in Delhi, Haryana and other states. They also said they had been procuring weapons for over a year.
In 2022, Abhishek, along with his associates Shivam, Manjeet and others, planned Kaju’s escape from BSA Hospital in Rohini. They went to the hospital armed with weapons and chilli powder, but as the hospital machine was not functioning, Delhi Police didn’t bring Kaju down from the van and the plan didn’t work out.
