BHUBANESWAR: Much to the relief of motorists, civic authorities began restoring uneven patches on important city roads, including the National Highway 16 following a spate of accidents and complaints of bad road conditions.
One such major line of uneven surface between Rasulgarh flyover and Vani Vihar Flyover on the NH 16, posed a major threat for motorists.
On April 27, TOI reported in these columns, such uneven patches on different city roads, including a dangerous stretch on the NH 16.“Authorities need to follow the rule books while constructing the roads. Making even surface for the road is important, otherwise the uneven surfaces of the road are sure to create a major risk for road users,” said Syed Maqbool Ali, former member, National Road Safety Council.
Maqbool Ali said the uneven patch created between the flyover road and the approach road near Vani Vihar on NH 16 was an example of bad road construction. “A point of difference for the connecting points of the two roads are fine, but not like what was done here,” Ali said.
Several other arterial roads, including the Jaydev Vihar Nandankanan Road has similar uneven patches at several intervals and has turned out to be a nightmare for vehicle drivers.
“There are several uneven patches important roads where we tumbled. It seems the authorities are least bothered about using the road rollers here to make the road surface parallel,” Suresh Pradhan, a resident of Unit IV said.
Works Department chief engineer (road) TP Mishra said that all the concerned divisions of the road and building works have been instructed to identify the stretches with problems. “All such road patches will be identified and repair work will be completed before monsoon,” Mishra added.
