CHENNAI: Enjoy the cloudy weather and occasional showers while they last as cyclone Mocha that's likely to brew over southeast Bay of Bengal may bring back hot and dry weather to the city and suburbs next week.
While IMD said it will provide the path and the intensification of the system after a low pressure forms, private forecasters and bloggers said the system will strengthen into a cyclone and move towards Myanmar leading to temperature rise in the city and the surrounding regions after May 10, as the system will take away the moisture in the atmosphere.
For the next 48 hours, the city and the suburbs are likely to receive thunderstorms and lightning with light rain over some areas. The skies may be partly cloudy, and the temperatures may be at a maximum of around 35-36 deg C and a minimum of around 27 deg C.
IMD said a cyclonic circulation is likely to develop over southeast Bay of Bengal around May 6 and under its influence, a low pressure area may form over the same region around May 7. It may further intensify into a depression over southeast Bay of Bengal around May 8. "It is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm while moving nearly northwards towards central Bay of Bengal. The details of its path and intensification will be provided after the formation of low pressure area. The system is under constant watch and being monitored regularly," an IMD bulletin said.
The cyclone, if it forms, may be named Mocha, a name given by Yemen.
Mahesh Palawat, chief meteorologist, Skymet Weather, said temperatures may rise by two to three degree celsius in the city when the system skirts northwards. On Friday, the temperatures were 34.1 deg C in both Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam and the average temperature for May is 37.1 deg C. "The temperatures may touch near normal for the season as the cyclone moves. But for the next two days, Chennai may receive one or two spells after which the weather may be dry," he said.
Blogger Pradeep John said there will be temperature rise particularly in parts of north Tamil Nadu, including the city, because the cyclone will drag all the moisture away leading to an increase in the land breeze that may bring dry winds over the city and may delay the entry of sea breeze. "Temperature may rise after May 10. Till Monday, we have some chances of rainfall," he said.
