Newborn found abandoned in Howrah-bound train in Odisha
BHUBANESWAR: Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel on Saturday rescued a newborn from a Howrah-bound train. The baby boy was lying unattended near a toilet of the general compartment adjacent to the guard lobby of the superfast express train.
Train number 22832, which was coming from Sri Sathya Sai Prasanthi Nilayam, reached Khurda station’s platform 1 at around 6.40am. The RPF staff got information about the baby from a passenger through Rail Madad app, a grievance redressal mechanism of the Indian Railways.
“Khurda Road RPF personnel along with railway staff were rushed to the compartment and rescued the newborn. We informed Khurda Childline and members of Society for Children (SOCH), a non-profit organisation from Bhubaneswar, about the incident. They immediately reached the spot,” said an RPF officer.
Later, the baby was sent to the divisional railway hospital at Khurda for check-up. Later, the baby was referred to community health centre (CHC), Sandhapur, Jatni for vaccination.
The baby took all required vaccines at the hospital. RPF also informed the government railway police (GRP) regarding the matter. “After discussion with the child welfare committee (CWC), the baby was handed over to the SOCH representatives by following all legal formalities for further course of action,” said the officer.
