COIMBATORE: The city corporation would construct a multi-level car parking lot at the upcoming Semmozhi Poonga at Gandhipuram.
A senior corporation official said Rs30 crore had been earmarked for the parking facility from the Rs172.2 crore that had been allotted for the development of Semmozhi Poonga, which would come up on the central prison premises.
The multi-level parking lot could accommodate around 280 cars at a time. In addition, another 500 cars could be parked on the premises of the park. The facility would be open for both the visitors to the park and nearby Nehru Stadium.
The Semmozhi Poonga would be the city’s one of the lung spaces with a variety of gardens and a large number of trees, including rare and endangered ones. In the first phase, the park would be developed on 45 acres that is readily available. In the second phase, the park would be developed on 120 acres after shifting the prison.
At present, the city has a multi-level car parking on DB Road at RS Puram that was built by the corporation with the smart city funds.
The city corporation has also sent separate proposals to the commissionerate of municipal administration (CMA) to construct multi-level car parking lots on Cross Cut Road at Gandhipuram and Raja Street.
Each facility would be constructed at a cost of RS 20 crore and have a capacity to house 250 cars. “We hope that the CMA will fund one of the facilities. In that case, the city corporation will meet the cost of the remaining one from its funds,” a source said. tnn
