Hello and welcome to Sportstar’s LIVE coverage of the IPL 2023 match between Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians from the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium on Sunday.
Arshad is back after conceding 20 runs in his first over. He starts off with a slower one outside off and Dube is beaten. SIX! Short, angling down leg and Dube pulls this over fine-leg for a maximum.
Akash Madhwal into the attack. Comes around the wicket to the left-handers. A couple of singles off the first two balls. FOUR! Lucky boundary. Conway shuffles across, looking for the scoop. Doesn’t connect this and the ball deflects off his body and goes to the boundary. Mumbai has reviewed this for LBW. OUT! Great review as this is hitting the stumps and there is not bat involved. Loud cheers as MS Dhoni walks in. Gently defended to mid-off. He is off the mark with a single as he turns one off his pads. Slow and short and Dube pulls it to deep backward square-leg for a single and keeps strike.
Stubbs comes back. Conway starts off with a single. Dube guides the ball late behind point for a dot ball. A rank full toss down leg but Conway can only bottom edge it behind for a single. He then misses a reverse-sweep, which is followed by a stifled LBW appeal. Strategic Time Out.
Archer comes back for his final over. Slower one outside off and Dube swings and misses. A couple of singles for both batters as Archer keeps it full. Four singles and Archer fails to pick up a wicket. Chennai well on course for a thumping win.
Goyal bowls out. Conway pulls through midwicket for a single. SIX! Dube rocks back and sends this sailing over deep midwicket for a maximum. He is off the mark in style. A couple of dots to follow as Goyal varies his length. SIX! Dube is in a hurry. He slog sweeps this over midwicket for a second six this over.
Here comes Stubbs with the ball. SIX! Rayudu breaks the shackles with a maximum. He steps out and wallops this over deep midwicket for a big maximum. Hundred up for CSK in 12.4 overs. OUT! Rayudu cuts next ball and hands an easy catch to backward point. Shivam Dube comes in next. One ball to go in the over. He is beaten outside off as the ball turns away a touch.
Goyal will continue. Rayudu gets low to sweep the first ball for a single. Conway pulls the next one for a single. Rayudu punches off the backfoot through point for one more. Conway chips one over covers as his bottom hand comes off and he gets a couple. Two more and a single to end the over. CSK is happy picking the ones and twos as long as the required rate remains under six.
Chawla bowls out. Four singles from the over and Chawla ends with two for 25 from his four overs.
Goyal continues. Impact Player Rayudu is off the mark with a single. Excellent over. Just three singles from it. At the halfway stage, CSK needs 56 runs at less than run-a-ball.
SIX! Rahane launches this tossed up Chawla delivery for a maximum over long-on. Googly turning into Conway, who goes back to defend and gets a thick outside edge for a single at cover. OUT! This is another googly, Rahane misses trying to defend on the front-foot. Given out leg-before by the umpire. Rahane reviews.
Debutant Raghav Goyal into the attack. Rahane punches off the backfoot for a single through point. FOUR! Conway lifts this over covers off the backfoot for a boundary. Absolute elegance from the Kiwi! Rahane steps out and pushes one to long-on for a couple. Both Rahane and Conway have looked comfortable against spin today and are not in a hurry to end this chase. Smart batting.
Chawla continues. FOUR! Full outside off and Rahane slaps this through covers. Five singles to end the over.
Archer bowls his third in the PowerPlay. Tight over. Archer uses his change of pace to good effect and beats Conway off the last ball with a shortish delivery outside off. Conway swivels and pulls but misses the ball.
Piyush Chawla into the attack. OUT! Gaikwad goes first ball. This looked like a loose half-tracker. Gaikwad goes back to pull this and gets a top edge and Ishan Kishan takes an easy catch. Ajinkya Rahane comes in and starts off with a single through covers. Conway gets behind the line of the ball and defends. Another dot as Conway opens the face of the bat and guides it to short third-man. A couple of singles to end the over.
Archer continues. FOUR! Conway flicks this over midwicket for a one-bounce four as Archer misses his line again. Next one is driven through covers but stopped by the fielder and it will just be a single. FOUR! Width outside off and Conway slashes this over point for another boundary. A peach of a delivery to end the over. Moves into Conway sharply from outside off and beats him all ends up.
Arshad Khan replaces Green. SIX! Gaikwad pulls this over deep midwicket for a maximum. FOUR! Sublime timing from Gaikwad. Opens the face of the bat and finds the gap behind point. FOUR! Driven down the ground by Gaikwad as Arshad overpitches on this occasion. SIX! Another maximum for Gaikwad to end the over and 20 runs come from it.
Jofra Archer from the other end. Conway is off the mark with a single first ball. Gaikwad gets an inside edge on the drive and gets a single behind point. FOUR! Archer misses his line, strays on the pads and Conway whips it fine and finds the boundary on leg-side.
Devon Conway and Ruturaj Gaikwad are out to set the run-chase rolling. Cameron Green to bowl the first over. Gaikwad starts off with a couple of dots as Green keeps it back-of-a-length outside off. He pushes the third delivery straight to mid-on for another dot ball. The buzzer goes off and it’s a no-ball for overstepping. First run on the board for CSK. FOUR! In the slot and Gaikwad pumps this down the ground for a boundary. Slower one next up on fourth stump and Gaikwad gets a bottom edge trying to defend it. FOUR! Full on the pads and Gaikwad flicks it with ease through midwicket for another boundary.
Pathirana bowls the last over. OUT! Arshad Khan is gone first ball as he slices one to the deep point fielder, who fumbles but eventually holds on to it. Jofra Archer in at No. 9. He gets a couple off an inside edge off the first ball he faces. Juicy full toss but Archer can only smash it straight back to the bowler - just a single. OUT! Stubbs holes out. This was in the slot outside off but Stubbs could only slice it high in the air. Piyush Chawla fails to dig out a perfect yorker. One ball remaining. Chawla slices this high in the air and ends the innings with a couple as the ball balloons over midwicket. An absolute death-bowling masterclass from Pathirana today.
Deshpande with the ball. David starts off by slashing one through point for a single. Stubbs drags the next one to long-on for one more. This is wide outside off and one extra run to Mumbai. OUT! David launches this high in the air and is caught at long-on. Here comes Arshad Khan. Dropped! Shivam Dube drops a sitter at long-off. That could have been two in two for Deshpande. FOUR! Stubbs drills this down the ground for a boundary. Smashed down the ground again by Stubbs but this is stopped in the deep this time and just a couple.
Pathirana at the death. Wide outside off and Stubbs slashes and misses. Stubbs then gets a single off an inside edge. OUT! Wadhera is gone, clean bowled. He shuffled across his stumps but this yorker crashed into the woodwork. Tim David is the next man in. He misses a wide yorker outside off. Another good yorker next ball and David just gets a single after digging it out. Slower one to end the over and Stubbs can only defend it back to the bowler. Excellent over under pressure.
Jadeja will bowl out. Ambati Rayudu comes in as Impact Player, in place of Maheesh Theekshana. Wadhera gets a couple off the first ball and gets to a gritty fifty off 46 balls. FOUR! Wadhera sweeps this to the fine-leg boundary. Finally some quick runs coming for Mumbai. Wadhera swipes the next one to deep square for a single. FOUR! Pulled away by Wadhera for a boundary through midwicket. FOUR! What an over for MI. Wadhera ends it by scooping this Jadeja delivery to the right of fine-leg.
SIX! Wadhera smashes the first ball of the over for a maximum over wide-long. He moves to 47 with that hit. FOUR! Stubbs unleashes a reverse-sweep and gets it past Dhoni for a boundary.
Pathirana to continue. Wadhera flicks a leg-side delivery to deep square for a single. FOUR LEG-BYES! Wadhera misses a pull and the ball goes off his waist and past Dhoni for four leg-byes.
Theeshana continues. Wadhera misses the sweep first ball. Theekshana then changes angle and comes from around the wicket. Wadhera hammers a full delivery to long-on for a couple. FOUR! Full toss outside off and Wadhera sweeps this to the fine-leg boundary as Conway dive in the deep goes in vain.
Matheesha Pathirana into the attack. Just three singles and a couple from the over. The Sri Lankan varies his lengths effectively.
Theekshana continues to operate from the other end. He keeps it on a good length and Stubbs almost chops on as he looks to steer one late.
Jadeja continues. FOUR! Quick one outside off and Wadhera moves outside off and sweeps to the fine-leg boundary. OUT! Suryakumar is cleaned up. Another quick one, Suryakumar wants to slash but misses. Tristan Stubbs comes in. Starts off with a single with an outside edge.
Maheesh Theekshana now joins the spin party as he replaces Moeen. Wadhera defends the ball back to the bowler. He then flicks one off his legs for a single. FOUR! Suryakumar finds the gap to perfection. Full toss on the stumps and driven through covers. A couple of reverse-sweeps to end the over as Suryakumar can’t get either of them away.
Jadeja continues. He is very accurate and keeps it on the stumps, allowing just a couple of singles off the first four balls. A couple of singles to end the over as Jadeja runs through his six balls in no time. Strategic Time Out called.
Moeen Ali from the other end. FOUR! Starts off with a loose full toss and Suryakumar hammers that to the midwicket boundary. He misses the sweep next ball and the ball runs away behind Dhoni after hitting Suryakumar’s thigh. FOUR! Wadhera makes room outside off and finds the boundary through extra-cover. Fifty up for MI in 7.3 overs. A couple of singles and a dot to end the over as Moeen comes around the wicket to left-hander Wadhera.
Ravindra Jadeja into the attack. Starts off with a wide down leg-side and the batters also complete a run as the ball deflects off Dhoni’s gloves. FOUR! Wadhera cuts this late to the third-man boundary with a slightly open face of the bat.
Deshpande to bowl the final over of the PowerPlay. Suryakumar is nearly caught off the third ball at short midwicket as he gets a leading edge. FOUR! Suryakumar swivels and pulls this to the square-leg boundary with wrists of steel. Low full-toss on the pads next ball and Suryakumar misses trying to whip it away. A risky single to mid-on to end the PowerPlay.
Chahar bowls his third over. FOUR! An authoritative pull shot from Wadhera to the square-leg boundary as Chahar pitches this one too short. Wadhera looks to push the next one through covers but gets a thick outside edge to backward point. Chahar darts in a good bouncer, which Wadhera evades, probably thinking it would be called wide. Slower one next up, on a good length and Wadhera blocks it back to the bowler. Yorker to end the over and Wadhera digs it out for a single.
Deshpande continues from the other end. He beats Wadhera with a slower one outside off. Just three runs from the over as Suryakumar ends it with a couple, flicking through midwicket.
Chahar continues and gets two huge wickets. First, Kishan is caught at mid-on after getting a leading edge and then Rohit Sharma is gone, caught at point, trying to scoop a shortish delivery. Suryakumar Yadav comes in and starts off with a couple off a low full toss.
Tushar Deshpande from the other end. Kishan misses the first one which is wide outside off. Pushes the next one gently to mid-off for a single. OUT! Green is clean bowled. Swipes across the line of the ball and misses and Deshpande gets the first breakthrough.
Ishan Kishan and Cameron Green are out to open the batting for Mumbai Indians. Deepak Chahar has the new ball. Green flicks the first one for a single through midwicket. Beaten! Kishan pokes outside off and misses the ball. FOUR! Full on the pads and Kishan flicks this over square-leg for a boundary. Next ball Kishan misses again as he pokes in the channel. FOUR!
