NEW DELHI: A Class X student at a Delhi government school was allegedly attacked in his shoulder and back with a sharp object after he jotted down the name of his classmate for creating a nuisance, police said.
Two juveniles have been apprehended and a case of attempt to murder registered, they added.
The school is located in Sangam Vihar.
According to the government, the incident took place outside the school on Thursday. The injured boy was undergoing treatment at Safdarjung Hospital and was out of danger, officials said.
A call regarding the attack was received at Tigri police station.
"The boy in his statement told police that he was appointed the monitor by the class teacher for a day and one of the classmates was creating a nuisance in the class. So he wrote his name on the blackboard. The student (whose name was written on the board) along with his friend asked the monitor to stop outside the school and stabbed him in his back and shoulder," said deputy commissioner of police (South) Chandan Chowdhary.
The doctor described the nature of the injuries as "grievous", he added.
Government Co-Ed Sarvodaya Vidyalaya Sector 8 Rohini principal AK Jha said, "Many a time, there are fights that begin from social media and then translate into classroom brawls. Several other times, ego clashes and hero-worship also lead to spats between students. In such junctures, the role of class teachers becomes crucial. However, it is also difficult for them to gauge that a disagreement or ego clash will have such extreme consequences."
"While certain steps like checking bags, moral education and regular meetings with parents can be of help, it is very difficult to tackle the issue completely. Overall, it is a very difficult situation to handle and mostly, it is upon teachers and principals to remain vigilant. With every incident, we become even more vigilant."
Last week, a 12-year-old boy studying at a government school was bludgeoned to death after he saw his two classmates smoking inside the school. The two boys were apprehensive that he would complain to the authorities.
