The industrial city of Pimpri-Chinchwad has witnessed a big jump in property registrations by women with as many as 10,000 women having residential property registered in their name, said officials. Last fiscal, 2,056 women purchased a property in their name which, according to the civic body officials, could be the highest in the civic body’s history.
As a step towards women’s empowerment, the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) offers a 20 per cent rebate in tax if a property is registered in the name of a woman.
“We have around 5.97 lakh properties in Pimpri-Chinchwad. Of these, at least 10,048 are registered in the name of women. Several others are jointly registered in the names of husband and wife. Then there are also some properties registered in the name of individuals,” PCMC assistant municipal commissioner Nilesh Deshmukh told The Indian Express Saturday.
“Last fiscal, the 10,048 women collectively paid a property tax of Rs 6.89 crore after the rebate. This is a positive step towards women’s empowerment,” said Deshmukh.
Last financial year, 26,628 residential, commercial and industrial properties were registered in Pimpri-Chinchwad. Of these, 2,056 were registered only in the name of women.
Of the 10,048 properties, the suburb of Sangvi has 1,793 properties registered in the name of women. In Pimpri, however, only 58 properties are registered in the name of women.
“There was a 25 per cent jump in residential properties registered in the name of women in Pimpri-Chinchwad in the last fiscal,” said Deshmukh.
The PCMC started a drive 11 years ago to increase residential properties in the name of women which helps them get a big rebate while making tax payments. In 2021-22, there were 7,992 residential properties in the name of women. “In 2022-23, the figure jumped by 2,056 properties,” officials said.
Officials are still collating figures about commercial and industrial properties registered in the name of women.
