Guwahati: Around 1 kg of smuggled gold, worth around Rs 70 lakh, was seized by the government railway police (GRP) from New Delhi-bound Rajdhani Express at Guwahati railway station on Friday.
One individual, hailing from Rajasthan, was arrested in connection with the seizure.
GRP, Guwahati OC, Prasenjit Das said that gold, weighing around 1 kg, was smuggled from Mariani, along the Assam-Nagaland border, to Delhi. “We had received inputs regarding the smuggling. A search was conducted after the Rajdhani Express arrived at the Guwahati railway station. Subsequently, a suspect has been arrested who was in possession of the gold,” he added.
The suspect has been identified as Revti Raman Soni of Bikaner in Rajasthan. “During preliminary investigation he said that he had boarded the train at Mariani, but could not produce any legal document to show as to why he was carrying such a large quantity of gold. Investigation is on to find out from where exactly did he get the gold and how big the network is,” Das said.
Police sources said that the most frequently used route for smuggling gold and drugs is from Moreh in Manipur, along the Indo-Myanmar international border, to Guwahati, via Dimapur in Nagaland.
However, they added that sometimes smugglers use new and unknown routes to escape being caught.
