Colour diagnosis: How to find what shade of clothes suit you

Colour analysis has been around for decades, but it has come back in style through social media sites like TikTok and YouTube.

It is a tool which can determine which colours will be the most flattering for you to wear.

It takes into account your eye colour, hair colour and the undertones of your skin.

Ruth Murphy currently offers the service in her studio in Glasnevin, Dublin.

Ruth, who has worked as an image consultant for 25 years, says it can provide an instant makeover.

It is essential to ditch any make-up before heading along so your true undertones come through.

Most people fall within four seasonal colour palettes: Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter.

Spring and Autumn are the warmer of the palettes, while Summer and Winter are the cooler-toned seasons.

The analysis itself feels a bit like going to the hairdresser, as you don a white cape while various coloured swatches are placed under your chin to determine which shades flatter your unique features.

The process has come to the fore online with TikTok filters that purport to help you find your colour season, as well as countless YouTube videos on the subject.

However, Ruth believes these filters should be taken with a pinch of salt and that an in-person diagnosis is essential.

"I went online to choose a foundation and they had a camera filter and I got five different results based on the light in the room at that time. So I think you can't beat the one-on-one, the human touch," says Ruth.

What if your current wardrobe is full of colours that are not in your colour season?

Rest assured colour analysis doesn't mean you have to throw out your less flattering colours.

Ruth suggests using your palette to change up the clothes you already have.

Adding scarves or even a basic t-shirt from your colour palette can make your features pop.

Colour analysis might not cure your shopping addiction, but it can inform your choices and make you a better shopper.

Picking colours and styles that suit you rather than being tempted by fast fashion trends.

"It's not great to be buying loads of clothes and throwing them out each season. This system is really for the long game, it's about buying clothes that suit you, but also clothes that last and can be used in multiple ways."

Colour analysis sessions take 90 minutes and can be booked via Ruth Murphy's website positiveimage.ie.
