GURGAON: Relief from the summer heat, which lasted for a week due to
rain and thunderstorms from April 29, will soon come to an end as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in its forecast has said that the temperature is likely to rise from Monday.
It was a sunny Friday as the minimum temperature was recorded at 20.2 degrees Celsius — 2.2 degrees above Thursday’s 18 degrees Celsius, while the maximum temperature was recorded at 33.9 degrees Celsius.
According to IMD, the city is likely to witness rain and gusty winds over the weekend. “It is expected that the city will witness some relief over the weekend but May 9 onwards the maximum temperature will hover around 37-38 degrees Celsius. As dry weather conditions are expected to prevail over the state, the maximum temperature is likely to touch 40 degrees Celsius next week,” said Manmohan Singh, director of IMD Chandigarh.
Last year, the city’s hottest day was recorded on April 30 when the maximum temperature touched 45.9 degrees Celsius. In 2021, April 29 was the hottest day when the mercury was recorded at 44.3 degrees Celsius.
The city’s air quality index (AQI) on Thursday was recorded at 146 (moderate). According to the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR), the predominant surface wind is likely to be coming from west directions in Delhi-NCR with wind speed of 8-10 kmph and thus the air quality is likely to remain in moderate category till Monday.”
According to guidelines issued by the Central
Pollution Control Board (CPCB), when AQI is ‘poor’, breathing discomfort can be felt by most people with prolonged exposure. People who are unusually sensitive to ozone or particle pollution may experience respiratory symptoms.
