Checking drive at units continues
Ludhiana: Officials of Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) continued checking of industrial units located near the gas leak site in Giaspura on Thursday.
The MC officials, however, started laying road gulleys in the area where the tragedy occurred so that gas could find space to move out. Meanwhile, a few residents demanded installation of vent pipes in the area to avoid tragedies in future.
The PPCB officials conducted checking in houses in the area after getting complaints about illegal units operating from residential accommodations. The officials claimed that they checked a few premises, but did not find anything objectionable. A senior PPCB official, requesting anonymity, said they have decided to carry out checking in this area in future also. He said during checking they might not find anything in houses, but there is a need to keep a check to ensure that such incidents do not occur again.
MC officials revealed that they were instructed to install a few road gulleys near the incident site so that gas could not accumulate at one place. The officials said deputy commissioner Surabhi Malik had also ordered officials to take a similar measure. The officials while checking also came across a house where the owner had installed vent inside the living room. Officials removed the same.
Officials claimed that in this area, most of the houses are too much congested, making them dangerous in case of any emergency.
Meanwhile, several kiosks in the area opened after four days.
