MC detects unit dumping waste in sewer lines
Ludhiana: On toes since the Giaspura gas leak incident that left 11 dead, MC teams on Thursday found a cloth & textile printing unit in Focal Point Phase 6 involved in dumping untreated waste in MC sewerage lines. The unit didn’t have an effluent treatment plant and could not produce any consent from the Punjab Pollution Control Board.
Soon after noticing unit’s untreated waste in the sewer lines, MC teams called up Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) officials to visit the spot and collect samples. Recommendations have been made to PPCB to take strict action against the erring unit.
Officials said the MC team led by SDO Kamal inspected the unit and found effluent treatment plant (ETP) missing. The unit staff was also not able to present any documents regarding the consent taken from PPCB to operate the unit. Proceedings have been initiated to snap the sewerage connection of the unit.
MC commissioner Dr Shena Aggarwal said regular drives are being conducted to stop the illegal practice. tnn
