Falklands appoints new Director of Education

The Falkland Islands Government (FIG) has appointed Marie Horton as the new Director of Education, starting from 27 May 2020. Horton is an experienced education professional with a degree from Cardiff University, a Master’s degree from Bristol University, and further professional qualifications from Liverpool Hope University. She has held senior management roles in schools, national and regional organizations, and local government in the UK.

Horton said she is looking forward to serving the Falkland Island community to deliver a broad quality education. Barry Rowland, Chief Executive of FIG, welcomed the appointment, saying that education and skills are critically important to the future of the Falkland Islands. He added that FIG has established a strong foundation led by a capable senior management team and that he looks forward to Horton joining the team and driving further improvements.

Stacy Bragger, the Education Portfolio holder MLA, also welcomed Horton and said that she joins an excellent team. Bragger thanked Executive Head Teacher Karen Steen for her exceptional work as the Acting Director over the last few months. Horton will be accompanied by her husband Rob and will undergo a 14-day quarantine as part of FIG’s COVID-19 response.
