NOIDA: The first time that Anil Dujana's name found mention in police records was in 2002, when he was accused of murdering a man in Ghaziabad.
Anil had no criminal record until then. But the next few years would see him emerge as one of the most dreaded faces of organised crime in NCR and western Uttar Pradesh.
Born Anil Nagar, he took the name of his birthplace - Dujana village in Bisrakh - once he gained notoriety for armed robberies, murders and most importantly, extortion.
Gangster Anil Dujana killed: Major encounter after Asad Ahmed's death in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh
With over 60 criminal cases lodged against him, Anil's name would spell fear among traders and businessmen, police said on Thursday. It didn't matter if he was in jail - his gang members would carry out the orders he gave from behind the bars.
Of late, UP Police had identified him as one of the top three gangsters in the western
UP region, the other two being Sunder and Randeep Bhati. Both Sunder and Randeep are in jail.
Apart from IPC sections, Anil was also booked under provisions of the Gangster Act and National Security Act. But before he etched his name in the world of heinous crimes, Anil would, in early 2000, sell stolen iron rods to Sunder Bhati, who had by then emerged as a dreaded gangster in the region.
Anil sniffed the opportunity and often flexed his muscles using Sunder Bhati's name.
But that was not for long. Over time, ties between the two turned testy over shares in business. Anil gradually got inclined towards the Randeep Bhati gang and started working for Naresh Bhati as well.
In the initial years, he would mostly extort money from businessmen and was involved in a few robberies too. It was during one such robbery bid that the Ghaziabad resident was ambushed and killed in 2002.
With time, Anil gained popularity. In a few years, he and his accomplices had started to kill for money.
Anil was arrested in 2012 and spent most of his time in jails since then. But that did not stop the tentacles of his gang from spreading to neighbouring districts.
While in jail, Anil met several criminals. He joined hands with them and used their connections to create terror in Muzaffarnagar, Meerut, Saharanpur and Shamli.
In a daring face-off in 2011, Anil and his associates had attacked Sundar Bhati, currently lodged in Sonbhadra jail.
In 2014, he was shifted from Luksar jail in Greater Noida to Banda jail in Banda following a series of clashes between his gang and that of Sunder Bhati.
In 2015, Anil Dujana was accused of plotting a double murder in Greater Noida in which a police constable was killed.
Out of jail, Anil had his tryst with politics too. In 2016, he contested the panchayat election as an independent and defeated his rival, Sangram Singh, by over 10,000 votes. Villagers still recollect Anil's rival going around in a bulletproof jacket, campaigning in his village.
He was arrested again in February 2019. But by then, he had married Puja, a resident of Gitora.
While in jail, Anil's gang would be managed by his brother Mainpal and others. The gang thrived mostly on extortions. According to an earlier police estimate, the Anil Dujana gang made around Rs 50 lakh a daily from traders and transporters.
Among the most recent cases against Anil was the alleged abduction of Sangeeta Tomar, a key witness against the gangster in a case. His death in an encounter with the UP-STF in Meerut came only a month after he had walked on bail.
