Nagpur: In a major boost to the city’s public transport, the Maharashtra government has released ₹137 crore for procuring 250 electric buses for Nagpur city. Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis had announced to provide the fund at a function held in the city recently.
The transport department of NMC has already received the fund. While NMC’s electric bus strength is set to increase, it will also reduce the civic body’s expenses on operating city bus service. “The NMC has already floated a tender for appointment of technical advisor for this,” said a senior official from the transport department.
Currently, the NMC is generating a revenue of ₹6 crore from the Aapli Bus service, while its expenses to run the transport service is around ₹14 crore per month.
The NMC has replaced 60 standard diesel buses of its Aapli Bus fleet, and introduced 74 electric buses, including 28 AC midi buses.
