Violent clashes out broke between tribals and members of the majority Meitei community in Manipur, displacing thousands of people. The clashes broke out after the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe status. Meiteis account for about 53 percent of population and live mostly in the Imphal valley. Tribals -- Nagas and Kukis -- account for another 40 percent of the population, and live mostly in the hill districts.
