Nagpur: Over 800 students from different courses have joined hands to oppose the Nagpur University’s move to hold summer examination at a short notice. The students met vice-chancellor Subhash Chaudhari demanding postponement of the summer exams, which are scheduled to start from May 15.
Students claim that they haven’t even got the mandatory 90-period teaching. They said that just 50% of the classes were conducted in the current semester. After announcements of exams, colleges are now rushing to wrap up syllabi, projects and practical sessions.
It’s not clear if the student would get any respite. None of the top officials of the NU – vice-chancellor Subhash Chaudhari, pro-VC Sanjay Dudhe, registrar Raju Hiwase, and director of examinations Prafulla Sabale – responded to TOI’s calls.
Unable to bear the intense pressure, students are taking to social media platforms to vent their ire.
Munish Perke, a law student, founded The Cube Community (TCC) during last year’s online-offline exam controversy. “We have held online polls. More than 90% of students say they are facing some or other problems with the summer 2023 examination. They are facing issues like less preparation time, clashing of exams, and pressure of submission. These things are putting the student community in a great difficulty. No one is ready to help us,” said Perke.
National Students Union of India (NSUI), led by its vice president Pranay Thakur, too met the VC demanding postponing of summer exams.
“They could have released the timetable in April. We have four practical subjects. Our final semester started in February. Everything is chaotic now,” a student said.
An engineering student said that the last semester was delayed due to the impact of the Covid. “Results of those exams are still not out. Students don’t know if they may have a backlog. In the final year we have practical exams, projects and theory exams. The timetable should have been announced a month back. Now, we have just 20 days to prepare. The college is pressuring us for all the academic activity,” he said, adding that they must get at least 10 days more.
“The university has announced the final year timetable on April 24, but it carries April 10 as the date. This is unfair. Same goes for backlog exams of all streams. Dates of practical exams are yet to be announced. At least, a 30 days gap must be given between announcement and the start of exams. We request postponing the final year exams by 15 days,” said a law student in a post on a messaging app.
A BCom final year student said, “BBA and BCom final year exams are clashing with CA exams. Our winter 2022 exams were held in January this year, due to which we got little time to prepare for summer exams.”
