LUDHIANA: The CIA-1 of Ludhiana police commissionerate on Wednesday night busted an IPL betting racket that was being operated by persons sitting in different corners of the world.
Police arrested three members — Sagar Kakkar of Haqiqat Nagar of Haibowal, Rahul Ghai of New Bhai Randhir Singh Nagar and Deepak Jain of Crosswind flats near BRS Nagar — who were further in touch with the main accused allegedly running the entire racket sitting in different countries.
A case under Sections 420 (punishment for cheating), 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC and relevant sections under the Gambling Act has been registered against the trio. The police also recovered two laptops, six mobile phones and Rs 12,500 cash during the raid.
Inspector Kulwant Singh, in-charge, CIA-1, said, “The accused were accepting bets on the ongoing IPL matches. The accused used some applications on computers and laptops which where being handled by the kingpins sitting abroad. The job of these three accused was to accept bets and update the same on the application on the laptop.”
“Such rackets work at different levels. At the lowest level, a person puts his money on the IPL match who is further in touch with the commission agents. The commission agents further share the bet with those who accept it. The arrested accused were at the third level of this multilayered system. They used to get commission from the bets,” the inspector added.
The official shared, “Bets are accepted on each ball. Those who run this racket get the update of each ball being played in the IPL match, a few seconds before its actual telecast on the TV. In those few seconds bets are made. The police further are questioning the accused to trace those who have been setting bets and the commission agents also.”
An FIR in this matter has been lodged at Sadar police station on the statements of ASI Balbeer Singh of CIA-1 who nabbed the accused from near Keys hotel, following a tip-off.
