A dust storm that is severely limiting visibility has forced the closure of westbound lanes of Interstate 70 for about five miles.
The lanes are closed from Exit 304 for Colorado 79 and Bennett through Exit 299 for Manila Road near Watkins, according to a tweet from the Colorado Department of Transportation.
#I70 westbound: Road closed due to safety concerns between Exit 304 – CO 79; Bennett and Exit 299 – Manila Road. Low visibility, traffic will exit at Manila Rd. and reenter highway. https://t.co/VO3PB8OCrd

The closure comes amid a dust storm warning for the highway in Watkins, Bennett and Strasburg that lasts until 5:45 p.m. The warning says there is near zero visibility because of blowing dust and that the visibility problem could make travel life-threatening.
⚠️Very dangerous situation along I-70 near Bennett! ⚠️Do not travel this area.
If ever caught in blowing dust, pull over to the side of the road. Better yet: Slow down, or even stop if you can before entering the dust! #COwx https://t.co/lx1qcLFriV pic.twitter.com/HT2NeYwOnG

While eastbound lanes still are open, slower speeds are advised. Motorists should attempt to stop if possible before entering the dust cloud. If that’s not possible, they should pull over as soon as they are able.
