AHMEDABAD: An India Post employee and his daughter were hospitalized after being attacked with a machete and cricket bat by three members of a family in Vithalapur village of Ahmedabad district on Tuesday.
The assailants were ostensibly angry at the assistant postmaster and his daughter - Rajesh Vyas (60) and Hina (25) - because Rajesh was running a post office out of a residential premises and this had led to "the comings and goings of Hindi speakers" in the neighbourhood. It needs mention that Vithalapur and its surrounding areas have recently seen a significant influx of migrant workers from other parts of the country coming to work in the factories there.
In his FIR, Rajesh Vyas stated that on Tuesday, he and postmaster Ravi Parmar were counting the mail at his house in the Brahmanvaas area, which has also served as a post office for Vithalapur and Jesangpura villages for seven years.
"My neighbours, Jigar Vyas and his mother Saroj, came in and began arguing with us aggressively about the post office being run from a residential space. They told us to go elsewhere because they did not like Hindi speakers coming and going in the neighbourhood to send or receive mail," said Rajesh.
"They began abusing me and as the argument heated up, Jigar ran to his home and came back with a machete. As Hina tried to protect me, Jigar struck her with it. He also hit me with it. Jigar's sister Aarti came running with a cricket bat and hit Hina on the head. Parmar intervened and rescued me and Hina. Before leaving, Jigar, Saroj and Aarti threatened to kill me," Rajesh stated in his FIR.
He added that Hina and he had been admitted to a private hospital in Sitapur village of Mandal taluka.
Vithalapur police filed a complaint of causing grievous hurt, voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty, criminal intimidation and abetment against the three accused.
