BJP drops PM's day-long road-show in Bengaluru after public express concern

An eight-hour road show by Prime Minister Narendra Modi was scheduled to take place here on Saturday, but the BJP on Thursday abandoned those plans in response to Bengalureans' worries about the challenges they would encounter with such a long event.

The Prime Minister will now do a road-show on two days, from 10 a.m. to 1.30 p.m. on Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 2.30 p.m. on Sunday, according to Union Minister Shobha Karandlaje.

The party announced on Wednesday that Modi will do a 36.6 kilometre road show in this area on Saturday, including 10.1 km between 11 am and 1 pm and 26.5 km between 4 pm and 10 night.

"The public has expressed that it will be a problem if the road-show is held for the entire day. So, we have respected their feeling and spread it over two days", Karandlaje told reporters on Thursday.

BJP's defeat in Karnataka to be major setback for Hindutva forces, allow oppn mount serious challenge in 2024: CPI(M)

The CPI(M) asserted on Thursday that the BJP's loss in the Karnataka assembly elections on May 10 will be a "major setback for the Hindutva forces" and will pave the way for the secular and democratic opposition to mount a serious challenge to the saffron party in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

The most recent editorial from the Left party's publication Peoples Democracy stated that the Karnataka assembly election is particularly significant at this time.

Retaining Karnataka is essential for the BJP's "ambition to spread its influence to other southern states," which is a drive for overall political control.

"Karnataka is the only southern state where the BJP-RSS combine has acquired a significant political and ideological influence. A defeat in the assembly polls will be a major setback for the Hindutva forces and will set the pace for the secular and democratic opposition to mount a serious challenge to the BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha election," the editorial said.

Chidambaram slams PM's 'stable govt' pitch in Karnataka polls

P Chidambaram, a senior member of the Congress, criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday for emphasising stable governments in his campaign speech for the Karnataka elections. He said that the BJP-led dispensations in the state following the 2018 elections were the result of "deceit, horse-trading, and money power."

Prime Minister Modi has argued in his speeches throughout the Karnataka election campaign that a strong and stable BJP administration with a majority is essential for the state's rapid overall growth.

Attacking the prime minister, Chidambaram tweeted, "Hon'ble PM has appealed to vote for the BJP to provide stable governments in Karnataka. After the 2018 general elections to the Karnataka state assembly, the state has witnessed four governments. Some stability!"

The Congress has also slammed the BJP over its "double-engine" pitch in the Karnataka polls, saying the May 10 election is to propel the Karnataka engine which got "derailed" by the BJP in the last four years.

Bengaluru's techies want new Karnataka govt to address mobility issues

TV Mohandas Pai, a veteran of the information technology sector, says Bengaluru's techies want to see the new Karnataka government do more to address the mobility issue in the city, with a focus on easing traffic on high-density roads, speeding up the completion of expanding the metro rail network, and deploying a large number of electric buses to improve public transport.

The former CFO of the leading IT company Infosys Ltd. refuted the notion that IT workers don't participate in elections in significant numbers.

Pai expressed deep concern over "growing" corruption in the State, saying irrespective of party, every successive government becomes more corrupt than the previous dispensation, and candidates of the May 10 Assembly elections in Karnataka spend crores of rupees for elections each in their constituencies.

Karnataka CM seeks fourth consecutive term from Shiggaon

Shiggaon in Haveri district has emerged as a high-profile constituency in this Assembly election, with Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai seeking re-election from the seat for the fourth time in a row.

Since 1999, Congress has failed to capture the seat that was previously seen as a bastion. In 1999 and 2004, the JD(S) and independent candidates respectively won from this area.

Bommai initially ran for office in the 2008 Assembly elections under the BJP banner after leaving the Janata Dal (United).

A Muslim MLA has previously been elected in Shiggaon, which has a sizable Muslim community.

Yasir Ahmed Khan Pathan, a candidate for the Congress, is running in the district; Shashidhar Yeligar is the JD(S) candidate.

PM Modi will lead a 36.6-km roadshow in Bengaluru on Saturday covering 17 assembly constituencies of the city, the sources said.

Addressing a rally in Uttara Kannada, PM Modi said the people of Karnataka do not support the “black culture” of abuses and said they should punish those making hurling such words by saying ‘Jai Bajrangbali’ when they cast their vote.

The Prime Minister said BJP wants to make Karnataka the number one state in India and has a roadmap and a plan.

Attacking Congress, he said a way to seek votes “is to abuse Modi”.

“What is the other way to seek votes, abuse Modi, abuses are being hurled…does anyone in Karnataka accept black culture, like a culture where anyone can abuse, accept a culture of abuse…does Karnataka forgive those who hurl abuses. What will you do this time, will you punish… when you press the button at the polling booth, punish those who abuse by saying ‘Jai Bajrangbali’,” he said.

Congress on Tuesday released its Karnataka election manifesto which talked of ban on organisations like Bajrang Dal and the Popular Front of India.

The Congress manifesto said the party is committed to taking firm and decisive action against individuals and organisations spreading hatred among communities on grounds of caste and religion.

“We believe that law and Constitution is sacrosanct and cannot be violated by individuals and Organisations like Bajrang Dal, PFI or others promoting enmity or hatred, whether among majority or minority communities. We will take decisive action as per law including imposing a ban on any such organisations,” the manifesto said.

Polling for Karnataka elections will take place on 10 May and the counting of votes will take place on 13 May.
