Cyclonic circulation in Chhattisgarh brings rain in Kolkata ahead of dry spell
A spell of rain lashed city on Wednesday
KOLKATA: A cyclonic circulation in Chhattisgarh caused a spell of rain in Kolkata on Wednesday. It, however, was unrelated to Cyclone Mocha, which is developing over southeast Bay of Bengal, according to the weathermen.
If the system develops into a cyclone and makes landfall in Bengal coast, the districts of south Bengal are likely to witness several thunderstorms After May 12. But from May 6 till May 12, Kolkata, along with other south Bengal districts are likely to see a dry spell, said meteorologists.
While it is still too early to track the route of the system, Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) director G K Das said it was moving northward. Any cyclone-related thunderstorm activity in West Bengal is unlikely before May 12. "Judging by the current developments, from May 7, there may be a period of low-pressure. This will be followed by a depression on the next day. From May 9, we could be able to identify a cyclone," said Das. Two consecutive RMC bulletins on Thursday and Friday would be able to provide more clarity on the cyclone, its movement and its expected landfall, Das added.
The rain on Wednesday kept the maximum temperature at 34° Celsius, a marginal fall from the 34.8° Celsius recorded on Tuesday, and almost two notches under normal maximum temperature.
