Office-goers and other commuters in Pune and surrounding regions were caught by surprise as heavy to very heavy rain lashed the city on Thursday, resulting in water-logging in many areas.
In a few hours Pune and surrounding regions received heavy rainfall, which according to the India Meteorological Departm-ent (IMD), was due to a cyclonic circulation over Chhattisgarh and surrounding regions.
Summer seems to be going soft on Pune so far, with April being the wettest month in the past 20 years. At present, a new western disturbance (moisture carrying winds from the Mediterranean Sea) is supposed to be active over North india. Also a new cyclonic storm is on the verge of forming over the South Bay of Bengal. Pune and its surrounding regions are experiencing Western Disturbance and cyclonic circulation inland.
IMD has issued a yellow alert for the region mainly to warn people against lightning and gusty wind.
People have been advised to take care and not take shelter under trees or use electronic devices during thunderstorms.
On Thursday, places on the periphery of Pune, like Chinchwad, Khed, Magarpatta, received very heavy rainfall.
As per the India Meteorological Department, Khed has Bhor have received 20 mm of rain, followed by Chinchwad, with 17.5 mm of rainfall. Traffic snarls were reported from Wakad and other areas as commuters struggled to reach home.
