Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, on Thursday said a hearing on the SAFE Banking Act could come as soon as May 11.
"We're gonna move quickly on it," NBC News reported him as saying.
Attempts to pass the legislation, which would give legal cannabis businesses access to the US banking system, have stalled in the past few congressional sessions, even though it has passed the House several times.
In late April, Sens. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) and Steve Daines (R-Montana) reintroduced the bill in the Senate. It was also reintroduced in the House by Reps. Dave Joyce (R-Ohio) and Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.).
"We have a path to a hearing and floor vote. Let's get it done!" Merkley tweeted on Thursday.
