PUNE: A software engineer looking for a part-time job lost Rs 5 lakh to cybercrooks between April 16 and 18 in yet another online task fraud in the city.
Senior inspector Dnyanewshwar Katkar of the Chikhali police told TOI that the complainant had worked with a software company. While searching for a job, she came across an offer for a part-time job, where she could earn money by sitting at home by just completing a few online tasks. "The woman accepted the offer. She completed the tasks and earned money," Katkar said.
She was then told that she could earn more if she invested in prepaid tasks. "The woman first invested Rs 1,000, and got Rs 1,900 in return. She then transferred Rs 5 lakh over two days," Katkar said. The woman only became suspicious after she was told to transfer more money and she was not able to withdraw the amount she had already invested.
Katkar added that the probe has so far revealed that the amounts were transferred to a bank account in Mumbai and another in New Delhi.
