UP Municipal Election 2023 Live Updates: State reports 52% voter turnout in first phase

A sub-divisional magistrate died due to cardiac arrest while on election duty at Jyoti Khudia polling station here in Uttar Pradesh on Thursday morning, officials said. Virendra Kumar Mittal collapsed at the polling booth and was rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors declared him dead, they said. Additional district magistrate Ramji Misra said Mittal was appointed as the returning officer of Jyoti Khudia Nagar Panchayat elections. He died of a suspected heart attack while on election duty. The heated argument broke out when former deputy chief minister Dinesh Sharma went inside polling centre to cast his vote. The argument started when Samajwadi Party workers clashed with BJP workers and hurled abuses at each other.

UP Municipal Election 2023: 58-year-old Dwarika Prasad Tiwari, who despite his physical challenges, made the effort to exercise his right to vote at City Convent College in Balaganj Lucknow.

"Voting is an essential aspect of any democracy, and every citizen should make an effort to participate in the democratic process. In my teenage, my elders told me the struggles the country faced to get freedom so I don't miss even a single election where I don't cast my vote," says Dwarika Prasad.

In his tweet, Rajnath Singh appealed to the voters to not only vote themselves but also encourage others to do the same. The voting for the municipal elections in Uttar Pradesh is being held in several phases, and the results are eagerly awaited by all the political parties involved.

Brajesh Pathak appealed to public to vote for development. He claimed a big win for his party in the municipal corporation elections, with the majority of seats going to the BJP. Pathak remained busy in election management and monitored the voting process. He collected information about the voting percentage in his constituency and encouraged voters to participate.

Rama Shankar Singh (84) and Sita Devi (80) duo voted at Martin purva polling centre. "We have been voting since the age of 18. We wanted to reach the booth early in the morning to avoid the hassle. We exercised our franchise for better civic amenities."

For last 3 hours, Anup Kumar Khatlani (51) visited various polling booths, but couldn't find his name in electoral roll. "I have a family of 12 people, till last year all of us used to vote together but this time, the names of 10 members of my family were eliminated from the list," said Khatlani.

After two weeks of hectic campaigning, the candidates in fray for the civic polls got some time to unwind on Wednesday ahead of the polling day on Thursday. They spend the day relaxing, doing yoga, enjoying time with their families and partying with their loved ones. A total of 2,510 polling booths have been installed in 110 wards. To promote women participation, the SEC has installed one pink booth at Municipal Nursery school near Mall Avenue.According to the SEC, there are 760 sensitive polling booths in city limits.

Will the city of Nawabs shed the tag of 'laidback attitude' and come out in large numbers to vote in the LMC elections on Thursday? The question assumes significance because urban local bodies elections are about 'Bijli-Sadak-Pani' that affect daily lives of all. Still, the turnout in these polls in Lucknow has always been low in comparison to assembly and Lok Sabha elections.
