The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has directed its ward offices to remove all illegal hoardings in their respective jurisdiction or face action. The directive has come in the backdrop of the hoarding collapse accident in Pimpri-Chinchwad last month in which five people were killed.
“The PMC has completed the survey to identify illegal hoardings in the city. In the last year, 960 illegal hoardings were pulled down. The ward offices have directed to remove the remaining illegal hoardings in their respective areas by May 31. Anyone ignoring their duties will face action,” said Additional Municipal Commissioner Kunal Khemnar.
According to the PMC, the city has 3,900 hoardings, and 2,611 were identified as illegal. The civic administration removed 960 illegal hoardings and legalised 288 that fulfilled the criteria. It rejected applications for legalising 90 hoardings.
Action is pending on 800 illegal hoardings, while owners of 436 have applied for legalising them. Owners of 13 hoardings have appealed against the PMC in court, while owners have removed 24 hoardings on their own.
The PMC is intensifying the action as illegal hoardings threaten life, especially during unseasonal thunderstorms.
