Coimbatore: The southern bench of the National Green Tribunal has sought a timeline from the city corporation commissioner to clear legacy waste and action to be taken on unsegregated waste being dumped at the Vellalore dump yard.
The tribunal, consisting of Justice Pushpa Sathyanarayana and expert member Satyagopal Korlapatti took up the case filed by K S Mohan, secretary of Kurichi-Vellalore
pollution prevention action committee for hearing on April 26. It instructed the the city corporation commissioner to file an action-to-be-taken report to deal with the piling up waste. It also directed him to explore the possibility of hiring the latest machinery to segregate legacy waste to speed up the process and ensure that there is no fire in the dump yard.
Meanwhile, Mohan in an affidavit filed before the tribunal, mentioned that the corporation is collecting only 20% of waste as segregated from households. He demanded immediate steps to improve collection of segregated waste.
