CHENNAI: A fire breakout at an electric bike showroom in Peravallur on Tuesday night reduced 21 electric bikes to ashes. The fire and rescue department personnel said no casualties were reported. They added that the fire could have been a result of a short circuit in one of the bike batteries that were put on charge.
Peravallur police said the e-bike showroom, run by Prakash of Wall Tax Road, also functioned as a service centre. The fire and rescue department personnel said that the fire started from the service station part of the showroom and spread to other parts.
As the fire spread to other parts of the showroom, a total of 21 e-bikes worth around 21 lakhs were gutted. Tender vehicles from nearby fire stations — Kolathur, Sembium and Vyasarpadi — reached the spot and doused the fire. Fire department personnel told the e-bike showroom owners that they should follow security guidelines while selling and servicing e-bikes.
