Gumla: At least four persons were killed and 27 injured after a vehicle carrying a wedding party overturned in Gumla district, police said on Wednesday.
The deceased include the parents of the bride. Of the injured, 12 are said to be critical, police said. Chief minister Hemant Soren on Wednesday expressed grief over the loss of lives in the accident. “Heartbroken by the news of the death of four people in a road accident in Dumri, Gumla. May God give strength to the bereaved family members Medical facilities are being provided to the injured people in the accident,” Soren said in a tweet.
The deceased were identified as Sundar Gayar (55), wife Biranti Devi (50), Savita Nagesia (45) and Eranius Kondo (50) — all residents of Katari village under Dumri police station.
The pick-up van with 35-40 people overturned near Jarda village after the driver, who was in an inebriated condition, lost control.
Deputy superintendent of Gumla sadar hospital said that two persons were referred to Rims in Ranchi. “Nine persons are under treatment at sadar hospital here, and one person with minor injuries were released already. Two have been sent to Rims in Ranchi,” he said.
“The attendees were returning home at night when the accident occurred. While four died on the spot, the injured were rushed to community health centre in Dumri,” an eye witness said.
Dr Roshan Khalkho of CHC Dumri said, “Of the 27 injured, 10 were minor boys and girls."
