PUNE: While s
ome traffic signals are difficult to spot in the city, many are not working. Readers explain what they wish to see at junctions:‘No need of timers at smart signals’Traffic signals don’t need timers as timing is dynamic, based on traffic flow. We could have a ‘starting amber’ stage in which yellow light stays on for 3-4 seconds before turning green. This will let people know when to start engines. Signals have to be properly placed to ensure cars don’t halt on zebra lines.
— Jayant Joshi | Member, Save Pune Traffic Movement‘Dangerous junctions’I feel junctions in the city need to be much safer. One has to be careful before setting off after the green light as we’re never sure the other side’s signal is working or not. Many signals are also placed within a short distance of each other. This increases commute time, even when the distance is less.
— Mihir Kurundkar | Cinematographer‘Poles should reflect signal colours’Often, motorists in Pune are unable to tell if a signal has turned green. The problem can be resolved if poles reflect the signal colours. Some traffic signals in Pimpri Chinchwad and Pune already have this feature. Pedestrian safety is another blindspot. Skywalks and underpasses should be built at all busy junctions with wide roads.
— Komal Karwande | Marketing specialist‘Glare beats University Chowk signal’The authorities should first ensure all traffic signals are in working condition. For example, the signal at Kumthekar Chowk in the Peth area seldom works. The signals along University Road are also unreliable, especially the temporary ones. Actually, the main University Chowk signal is pretty much invisible on sunny days.
— Shreya Lele | Student‘They’re difficult to spot’I have been driving in Pune for 7 years now and I’ve noticed that many signals are just impossible to spot. Then there are those with only one or two functioning lights. The traffic department should work with civic officials to upgrade signals everywhere.
