A Phoenix police officer required surgery after suffering "significant facial injuries" after responding to a domestic violence call Sunday night, police said.

The unnamed officer was investigating a domestic fight between a man and woman in the area of Central Avenue and Thomas Road just after 9:30 p.m. when the incident happened, according to police. The man physically attacked the responding officer, causing serious injuries that were not life-threatening, police originally said.

The unidentified suspect was later taken into custody near Third Street and Roanoke Avenue by additional officers.

In a statement Tuesday, Interim Phoenix Police Chief Michael Sullivan said that police were working with Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell to be able to prosecute the suspect "to the full extent of the law."

Sullivan said that the officer injured remained hospitalized, but is receiving the best possible care.

"We appreciate the public outpouring of support for our injured officer and our sworn and professional staff working day in and day out to keep our city safe," Sullivan said.

No other information was released Tuesday.
