AHMEDABAD: A 45-year-old woman living in the Gota area of the city hanged herself on Monday afternoon after her husband allegedly beat her with a
cricket bat for two hours. The deceased, Nirmal Yadav, had married Prithviraj Bhatotia in 2003. They have a 17-year-old daughter and an eight-year-old son.
According to the FIR registered by Nirmal's brother - Satyaprakash, a resident of Rewari, Haryana - Bhatotia had started harassing and beating Nirmal over petty issues soon after their wedding.
Satyaprakash, who works for a corporate house in Gurugram, said he received a call from a Sola police officer at around 4pm on Monday informing him of Nirmal's suicide. Satyaprakash came to Ahmedabad and went to see his sister's children, who told him what had transpired.
"My niece told me that her father hit Nirmal with a cricket bat for about two hours. To save herself, she had locked herself inside a room. Bhatotia then sat on a chair outside the room for another two hours, continually yelling at Nirmal that he would beat again when she came out," said Satyaprakash.
After sitting outside the room for about two hours, Bhatotia went to have a bath. Taking advantage of this, Nirmal's daughter called the police control room and told them that her father was assaulting her mother and she had locked herself inside a room.
A Sola police team reached the house at Aryan Pride Flats on Vande Matram Road in Gota. Police first tried to open the bedroom door and broke it open. They found Nirmal hanging by a sari. Police officers took down the body and sent it to Sola Civil Hospital for a postmortem.
Police have detained Bhatotia. Satyaprakash told investigators that Bhatotia and his family members had frequently demanded money from Nirmal's parents and as they could not provide they assaulted her.
Nirmal had returned to her parents' home in Rewari eight months ago and filed an FIR at Kasola police station. That case is still sub-judice in a court there. Despite this, she returned to Bhatotia's house after about 20 days, as her children were young, said Satyaprakash. As soon as she returned to Bhatotia's house, he again started beating her.
