Heavy rain upsets tourists’ plans in Ooty for two days
Udhagamandalam: Heavy rain lashed Ooty on Monday and Tuesday, upsetting the plans of tourists. Ooty registered 67.4mm rain for 24 hours ending 7am on Tuesday. The town recorded another14.4mm rain from 7am to 4pm.
Tourists have been thronging Ooty town for the past three days, despite the heavy showers. All the tourist spots in Ooty are flooded with visitors and hotels are fully booked.
According to the government botanical garden officials, more than 25,500 people, the highest in this season, visited the garden on Monday. About 25,154 footfalls were registered on Sunday.
“Botanical garden always draws large crowd on May 1. This year, the footfalls were more than last year, despite the heavy rain,” an official said.
N Kannan, a tourist from Kerala, said, “It rained for more than two hours on Monday and Tuesday, upsetting our schedule. We were forced to stay indoors.”
Sugumaran, another tourist from Salem, said, “We enjoyed the rain. It was a different experience. But our schedule was disturbed.”
Police said they had a tough time regulating the tourist vehicles, as they were not aware of proper routes. According to them, at least 30,000 vehicles hit the hill town on Monday and Tuesday.
