20-year-old arrested after multi-county police chase
A multi-county police chase ended in a Columbia County crash early Wednesday.
Alexander Maddox Fields, 20, of Augusta, is charged with felony fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, reckless driving, failure to maintain lane, failure to obey traffic control devices and driving with a suspended or revoked license, according to jail records.
On Tuesday, a 33-year-old Martinez man reported his black 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche stolen from his work, according to an incident report from the Columbia County Sheriff's Office.
At 2:35 a.m. Wednesday morning, deputies responded to I-20 west at the Richmond County line for a Richmond County pursuit involving the stolen Avalanche, according to a news release.
Columbia County deputies Aaron Moore and Dayton Seadorf pursued the truck from the county line before traveling north on South Belair Road, according to the release. The truck continued to travel north on South Belair Road, then North Belair Road, before crossing over Furys Ferry Road onto Mullikin Road.
The pursuit ended in Columbia County when the driver, Fields, lost control and crashed at the end of Mullikin Road.
Fields was taken into custody without incident, according to the release.
