Expressing solidarity with Sharad Pawar, who announced to step down as the party chief, the city unit of NCP on Tuesday appealed to the veteran leader to withdraw the decision, with all the office-bearers resigning from the party in support of Pawar.
Pawar made the announcement at the launch of the second edition of his autobiography, Lok Majhe Sangati, at the Y B Chavan Centre in Mumbai, in the presence of his wife Pratibha, daughter Supriya Sule, nephew Ajit Pawar, and senior party leaders.
Following this, workers of the city NCP unit gathered outside the party office carrying placards and photos of Pawar and raising demand to withdraw the decision.
City NCP spokesperson Pradeep Deshmukh, senior leaders Ravindra Malvadkar, Nilesh Nikam, Kaka Chavan, Roopali Patil-Thombare, Sadanand Shetty, Mrunalini Pawar, Ajinkya Palkar, Vikram Jadhav were among those who staged dharna outside the party headquarter in Shivajinagar.
Other senior leaders including city NCP chief Prashant Jagtap, former mayor Ankush Kakade, Baburao Chandere were in Mumbai for the function and also participated in the dharna appealing Pawar to withdraw his decision.
“We have always stood by all decisions taken by Pawarsaheb but we do not accept this decision. His absence as party unit chief will be loss not only for the NCP but for the entire country,” said Deshmukh.
He said that they will continue to persuade the Pawar to continue as the NCP chief till he accepts the demand of party workers.
Another party office bearer said, “NCP is a family and Pawar sahib is the father figure. The father figure cannot retire. So we will not withdraw our resignation unless Pawar sahib takes back his decision.”
Sandeep Kale of Saheb Pratishthan, another party worker, said that he has been doing social work after getting inspired by the NCP leader.
In a letter to Pawar, he said that the NCP is incomplete in absence of Pawar as party president and appealed that the state and country is going through difficult times and there is need for Pawar to lead from the front to handle the situation.
