The road accident situation in Goa is a matter of grave concern. Several lives have been lost in less than a week. A similar situation was witnessed in the second half of February this year and chief minister Pramod Sawant had said that drunken driving and indiscipline on the roads were among the main causes for the accidents. He had also said that an analysis was being done and that the government would come up with an action plan to reduce road accidents and fatalities. Having failed to act, now the PWD has been asked to install the necessary infrastructure within two weeks. Knee-jerk reactions and piecemeal solutions—something the government is known for—cannot help reduce accidents. Expressing concern about the death due to road accidents is like shedding crocodile tears. If the government is serious in effectively handling the situation, it has to act in a highly professional manner.
