Pune city police have arrested a man for allegedly preparing a fake nikahnama in a bid to bring disrepute to an unmarried woman and her family members. Officers identified the accused as Shaikh Khalil Shaikh Jamil, 30, a resident of Buldhana. Earlier, another accused was arrested in the case, they said.
The 23-year-old woman lodged the first information report (FIR) in this regard at Chandan Nagar police station in July 2022. According to the police, the complainant, a resident of Kharadi, found that even though she was unmarried, fake documents of her marriage were posted in some WhatsApp groups.
She then filed a complaint against two persons, including Imran Shaikh and Shaikh Khalil Shaikh Jamil. It was alleged that the two accused prepared bogus documents such as fake marriage photographs of the woman with Imran, a fake nikahnama and a marriage certificate.
A statement issued by the police Monday said Imran was arrested earlier, but Jamil was on the run. A search was on for him. On April 29, acting on a tip-off, a police team comprising sub-inspector Goraksh Ghodke nabbed Jamil from Buldhana. The police said he was shifting his location and changing his mobile phone number frequently to evade arrest.
The police have booked the two accused under sections 420, 467, 468, 471, 500 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code.
