‘Create jobs instead of looking for one’
Mangaluru: Instead of looking for a job, create it, urged Ullas Kamath, former joint managing director of Jyothy Labs and founder of UK&Co.
He was speaking at a programme jointly organised by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, G20 India 2023, Young Indians Mangaluru Unit, Confederation of Indian Industries (CII), Y20 in collaboration with Alva’s Education Foundation, Moodbidri. A brainstorming session on 'A dialogue between young Indian achievers towards reimagining business for the future’ was held as part of the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav on Saturday.
Kamath said that amidst India emerging as the third largest economic power in the world, the gap between the rich and the poor is widening. “The youth should be aware of gender equality, environmental pollution, and freedom from hunger, only then is sustainable development possible. India is going through a huge digital revolution, and the government itself is taking steps towards digitalisation. The country's share in the global digital payment system is more than 45 per cent,” Kamath said.
He reminisced about the economic growth that India, which used to be called a poor, backward, and third economy, is now taking strides to become a developed nation with progress.
Later, in the first session of panel discussion on ‘Retaining sustainability’, social and climate action entrepreneur Divya Hegde, who is also a recepient of the United Nations Women’s Award, said: “Westernisation is not a development. Our forefathers led a peaceful and sustainable life, but we are not leading such a tranquil life.”
TV Ramachandra, coordinator, energy and wetland research group, IISc, said that the Yettinahole project has caused a big dent to the green cover in the ghats and laying of pipeline has also destroyed several patches of green cover in the region.
Speaking on the occasion, India’s ‘Lake Man’ Anand Malligavad said simplicity itself is sustainability. He questioned youths over the scarcity of fresh water. “Success is possible only if there is commitment,” he said.
