PATNA: Noted economist and the first vice-chairman of Niti Aayog Arvind Panagariya has been appointed as the chancellor of Nalanda University .
He is the fourth chancellor of the university after Nobel laureate Amartya Sen, former Singapore foreign minister George Yeo, and Padma awardee and computer scientist Vijay Bhatkar.
Arvind Panagariya earlier served as a member of the governing board of Nalanda University. Expressing delight over the appointment of Panagariya as the chancellor, NU vice-chancellor Sunaina Singh lauded the choice of the President of India, who is also a visitor of the university.
“I congratulate Professor Panagariya over his appointment as the chancellor of Nalanda University. The university will benefit immensely from his scholarship, experience, and academic erudition,” she said, adding she envisions further progress of the university under his chancellorship.
Panagariya is a professor of economics and Jagdish Bhagwati Professor of Indian Political Economy at Columbia University, in New York, and is also the director of Deepak and Neera Raj Centre on Indian Economic Policies at the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University.
