PUNE: The city police and the Regional Traffic Office (RTO), Pune, suspended the driving licences of 300 motorists for driving rashly and negligently on city roads in the last seven days to bring discipline to traffic .
The police have sent a proposal for the suspension of driving licences of another 250 motorists.
"There is a lot of disrespect for motor vehicle rules in Pune city. We want them to follow basic traffic rules to maintain their safety and the safety of others on the road. We want to bring some discipline among the motorists in the city," Retesh Kumarr, Pune police commissioner, said."We will invoke stringent provisions of the Motor Vehicle Act against motorists found driving rashly and negligently on the roads and will confiscate their licences for suspension," he added.
The police chief said, "We have decided to act tough against traffic rule violators. If a motorist commits an offence deliberately for the first time, we will send a proposal to suspend the driving licence for three months. If the motorist is caught driving rashly again, the licence will be suspended for six months, and if he/she is caught for the third time, the licence will be suspended for a lifetime."
"We hope this will reduce the fatal as well as other minor accidents on Pune roads. Accidents will reduce if motorists follow the rules," he added. Deputy commissioner of police (Traffic) Vijay Magar said, "We have started invoking section 184 (dangerous driving) of the Motor Vehicle Act against motorists involved in wrong-side driving, installing modified silencers, drunk driving, violating no entry or one-way rules and riding triple seat, among others."
He added, "We generate visual evidence of the offences and then take down the details of the driving licence. A proposal with the details of the offence is prepared and sent to the RTO. We will take this stern action only against motorists deliberately breaking traffic rules and driving rashly and negligently. We maintain online evidence for the due course of action against them."
